yesterday’s tomorrow

Louise is really pretty… the lady who owns the bed and breakfast could not say it enough: “…she is sooo pretty!” …and from the pictures you might get an idea how pretty she is.. but just an idea… there was one fleeting expression I saw a few times, which was simply amazing… and I tried hard to capture it throughout the whole session, but I failed miserably… I hope I will get another chance to shoot with Louise to finally get it on film! 🙂

…the room was really beautiful as well… but a bit difficult from the light… I used the Nikon F4 with Kodak Tri-x and I planned to shot with the Aero Ektar… but it was too long for the setup in the room, so I chose to use the standard 135mm lens that is on the speed graphic… I took some film holders with TriX320 and some with Kodak Portra 400NC that I loaded ages ago but have never used… I am glad I did now… and I am sure I will load color film into them more regularly now…. I hope you like them…

    There’s a real vintage Hollywood look to some of the images with direct sunlight and strong shadows. I love that era of photography and saw a recent exhibition (Glamour of the Gods) in London that was just as stunning as your work. What are your thoughts on Tri-X 320? I like it with strobes but haven’t used it in daylight yet.

      Hey Nasir… I love the vintage Hollywood style myself… that is more or less the only thing I would use artificial light for… I just started using Txp320 and have no complaints so far… works great, easy to expose and the negs look great with standard developer. Probably will become my standard indoor 4×5 film…

    Jan, she is the most beautiful model you have worked with so far! Nothing compares when the sunlight hits those gorgeous eyes. Really well done.

    I am not sure if you have got my message on flickr but wondering how you develop Delta 3200 so that the grains would be fine? Do you use xtol, microphen or dd-x? And how long? Do you prefer to rate tri-x to 1600 than delta at 1600? I would appreciate it if you can give me some hints.

      Hi Aryan, I developed the 3200 (exposed at 3200) in HC110 B Dilution and I chose the film especially as I like this wonderful grainy look on medium format. I have not yet rated Tri-x yet at 1600 I think… I used the Neopan 1600 a few times and you can find some images on my flickr stream… contrasty and grainy – lovely 🙂

        WOW, the shadow details and sharpness is amazing in your 3200 photographs developed in HC-110 B. I didn’t think HC-110 would be good for Delta 3200. Did you developed it for 14.5min in 20c!? How did you go with agitation?

        I am trying to see if I can shoot Tri-X 400 120 roll @1600-3200 max and get nice results! Some folks on flickr are suggesting stand development with rodinal 1:100 for 120 min!!! http://www.flickr.com/groups/rodinal/discuss/72157608203774894/

    I love your work. Truly beautiful.

    I’ve got two questions:

    1) How do you expose for the mixed light on the face? Do you take a few different exposures and see what works? Or is there a way to figure it out? I’m really talking about number four in rows two, three and six, and number one in rows three and five.

    2) Do you get these locations for free? And on that note, how do you find them? And further on that note, how do you know when the light is going to happen?
